Philippians 4:13 is arguably one of the most well-known passages in the entire Bible. Yet, understanding these words apart from Paul’s context can turn them into something Paul didn’t mean. For many achievement-focused people, Philippians 4:13 has come to mean, “God will empower me to do whatever I set my mind to.” But Paul wrote the words, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” while in prison. In Paul’s world, prison was a place associated with shame.
