The religious leaders ask Jesus a humanly brilliant question, “Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” It’s a question for which there is no good answer. But Jesus doesn’t give them a good answer. He gives them a great answer with the wisdom of God that is beyond human capability, and gives them a history lesson at the same time.
